China-A Mediator Between Palestine And Israel
The Great Hall of The People-A Government building in China is used for welcoming famous government officials worldwide. China remained the center of attraction for the last few days due to the appearance of Mahmud Abbas–President of the State Of Palestine. This appearance has forced the great minds of the world to think. The President of Palestine was welcomed warmly with military protocol, and this protocol represents China’s future relations with Palestine. These relations highlight China’s tilt toward Muslim countries.
Flashback Of Palestine And China Relations
China was the first country to recognize the State Of Palestine and the Palestine Liberation Organization. If we take a new flashback at China and Palestine’s relations, there is a positive momentum in their relations after 2019. China wants to invest in Palestine and provide humanitarian assistance to Palestine. The Free Trade Zone was launched between the two countries in 2019. A recent MOU was signed between China and Palestine on The Belt And Road Initiative (BRI). In addition to financial assistance, China also supports Palestine diplomatically. This was evident in 2021 when China raised its voice against Israel’s destructive policy regarding Palestine in the United Nations.
Three Days Visit
During the three days visit of the Palestinian President to China, China, and Palestine both agreed to continue their good relations. China said they have always supported the just rights of the Palestinian people to restore their legitimate national rights. Chinese President Xi Jinping also assured Palestine of their support in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Palestine. There are almost 40 ongoing projects in Palestine, where China invests its resources and labor. You can understand the deepness of their relationship, from China’s act that China is supporting Palestine to constructing their Foreign Ministry building. China has a clear stance on the Palestine issue, and China supports Palestine’s right to an independent state. China backs the Two States Solution, according to which the Palestine issue should be solved according to the boundaries designed in 1967, by which East Jerusalem should be the capital of Palestine. China is also looking to play a facilitative role in the Palestine issue.
China And Israel Relations
Historically, China and Israel do not have bad relations with each other. China is interested in investing in Israel, and both have good links, evident from various ongoing projects in Israel and China. China has invested in Israel’s ports, which America did not like as Israel is a strategic partner of America. China also wants the Tech Startups of Israel to come and work in China. China wants to support Israel’s technology. For the last few years, the Chinese and Israel relations have seen a setback because of various diplomatic reasons. These reasons include the following:
- China raised its voice against Israel on the Palestine issue and called a Social Security meeting in 2021.
- On the direction of America, Israel recently issued a statement against China for Uyghur Genocide. Uyghur is a Turkish ethnic group who are Muslims and Xinjiang natives. The Chinese government is accused of killing various people of the Uyghur group. So, recently a statement against China from the Israel side increased the distance between China and Israel.
Failure Of Abraham Accords
Abraham Accords was a US-backed project. According to this, the US pushed various Muslim Arab countries to normalize their ties with Israel. This was first done by the United Arab Emirates and then by the other nearby countries. Now, America is also insisting Saudi Arabia normalize their relations with Israel.
Saudi Arabia’s view on Israel relations has turned dramatically in the last few months, and now Saudi Arabia is clearly saying NO to America. Saudi Arabia has clearly shown its stance on Two State Solution and wants a solution to the Israel-Palestine issue according to the 1967 boundaries. So, we are witnessing that Abraham Accords has no broad scope.
Objectives Of Abraham Accords
Israel is the representative of America in the Middle East. The objectives Of the Abraham Accords were:
- Ensuring Muslim countries recognize Israel. This will decrease the number of Israel’s enemies and also ease the pressure on America.
- Suppress Iran by collaborating with the Muslim world.
Reasons Behind Failure Of Abraham Accords
Abraham Accords is not getting as much success as it was planned. There are many reasons involved:
- The geopolitical tensions for America’s strategic partner, Israel, are growing because America is losing its grip on the Middle East, especially after America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. Pakistan has asked Russia for Oil, Saudi Arabia has its policy, and Afghan Taliban is not in America’s hands. So, these acts from various Muslim countries have weakened American control of the Middle East.
- America’s biggest enemy, China, has successfully removed the deadlock between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which served as an ice on the cake.
These actions have changed the game dramatically, and we have seen that the America-Israel plan to limit their enemies and stop China from interfering in the Middle East gains no profit.
China-As A Mediator Between Palestine And Israel
Palestine Issue is one of the core issues of the Middle East, and now it has become a global issue, so its solution is necessary for the world, and China thinks it has an essential role in this issue. The Iran and Saudi Arabia settlement of ties has boosted Chinese confidence, and now China plans to play a mediative role between Palestine and Israel. Since Saudi Arabia and Iran’s friendship, China has emerged as a father figure.
Israel’s Future Policy
Israel must consider their future as America is losing control of the Middle East. With whom will they shake hands for their future if America is entirely drawn from the Middle East?
China can offer this partnership to Israel and convince Israel to settle its ties with Palestine. If this issue is resolved, we can foresee peace in this Middle Eastern region enriched in natural resources.
China is also having an eye on these resources as they will be able to invest in these regions and can get economic benefits. So, China will shift its focus from Geo politics to Geo Economics.
Peace Attempts By America
There were many peace attempts by America in the Middle East, but after 2014 all these attempts were ruined due to increased Israel’s brutality in Palestine. A creative solution is required to settle the ties between Palestine and Israel. China is trying to convince both countries to agree upon their innovative solution.
American efforts to establish peace were not fruitful in the past, as America tried to counter its enemies like Russia and Iran through peace attempts.
Reasons Behind China’s Tilt Toward Palestine
A big question arises:
Every country is trying to limit Palestine’s social status, but why is China interested in Palestine’s rise?
The most straightforward answer to this question is that China is trying to keep all the groups and identities together. So, China considers Palestine a vital entity. If China successfully resolves the Palestine-Israel issue, this will result in peace in the Middle East, and China will get this credit.
Suppose the main issues of the Middle East, Saudia-Iran ties, and the Palestine-Israel Conflict get resolved by Chinese mediation. In that case, this will result in the complete removal of America from the Middle East. America was considered an essential body for mediation before Chinese interest in the Middle East.
So, China is now becoming a global leader by playing a mediative role; this will undermine America’s importance. This will also provide economic benefits to the regions and China. The policymakers of Israel will also rethink their future relations with China as a powerful entity.
So, the recent visit of Palestine’s president is of great importance, and the welcome from the Chinese side is also significant. The agreements signed between China and Palestine depict their future policies.
Let’s see what the future brings with it.
